Well Aware: Where there’s a will, there’s a well!

Well Aware

Well Aware is a nonprofit organization formed to provide life-saving water for the people of rural Kenya. We are a grassroots group of Austin-ites reaching out globally for a solution to the suffering caused by water deprivation in parts of East Africa.

All of our donations go directly toward out water projects, and the Kenyan community members work toward our efforts, as well, by crafting their indigenous jewelry for fundraising sales, in addition to contributing to the drilling process and upkeep of the water wells.

We facilitate a solid structure of awareness, education, drilling expertise and community involvement that will make a sustainable change for a people in dire need.

The Maasai

One of the most culturally rich groups in the world, the Maasai, live in the Rift Valley of Kenya. Their semi-nomadic lifestyles have equipped them with the ability to thrive in the most challenging of terrains. But, now, due to governmental relocation and neglect, as well as marked climate change, the Maasai are unable to survive with what they have.

The most severe drought in their history has claimed more than just their traditional livelihood. Most children no longer attend school because they must walk all day to find water that is not sanitary. Savagery and tribal warfare has increased dramatically due to competition over resources, and community leaders are abandoning their villages altogether in shame for being unable to provide. But the most tragic of the victims are infants, 25% of whom will not survive.

This does not have to remain the case. Access to clean, safe drinking water will return the Maasai to prosperity.

A Basic Need with a Simple Solution

The water wells that Well Aware is now drilling will service tens of thousands of people for their lifetimes. Plentiful supplies of water are below the surface in an aquifer, and Well Aware provides communities the means to access it. We will also provide the training and planning for a sustainable water supply and village farming.

Water

  • 1 in 6 people in the world do not have access to clean drinking water.
  • In rural Africa, children walk all day to return with only unsanitary water, preventing them from going to school.
  • Every 15 seconds, a child in Africa dies from water-born disease.
  • For children under 5 years old, illness from unsanitary water is the leading cause of death.
  • 88% of all disease in Africa results from unsafe drinking water.
  • Girls as young as 8 years old are sold into marriage in exchange for food and water so their families can survive.
  • The Kenyan government has declared a state of emergency but has yet to implement any relief.

Our Scope

Well Aware is currently working in conjunction with representatives of Bee Cave Drilling Company to drill large-volume water wells in rural Kenya. The scope of our projects can each service tens of thousands of individuals and their livelihood needs. For under $2 per person, we can provide clean, safe drinking water for their lifetimes.
